Levels of Maturity have been established to provide some rating standards to use in the assessment of the capabilities of an organization in the creation and management of Business Intelligence assets. Rating the whole of the organization for a Level of Business Intelligence Capability maturity should be the final step in any audit process. This rating should be the product of a full analyusis and detailed audit of the organization Business Intelligence assets. At the final stages of the audit, the audit team should have a relatively clear picture of the how effective the organization is in the management of Business Intelligence Assets.
There are five levels of accomplishment for the Organization. ( These are also applied to the Components and Key Assessment Features - with slightly different definitions for the ratings, as shown in individual ratings charts for each component.):
Level 1: Initial - This is the lowest rating which is given for any organization and assumes data marts or similar structures, but no The BI arena is characterized by stand alone data marts; with silos of data. The average rating for the Key Performance Indicators is 1 for each set of Key Assessment Feature for all components present.
Level 2: Elementary Integration - The organization can duplicate the basic BI technology for new applications, e.g. replication of data mart structures. First steps have been made in integration of the data - either federated architectures or an elementary data warehouse. The integration attempts may be enterprise supported or the product of individual business areas. Integration is fragmented and there are stand alone data marts. Average rating for the Key Performance indicators is 2 - 3 for each Key Assessment Feature and component.
Level 3: Enterprise Effective - The organization has a centralized data warehouse and is relatively mature in use of Business Intelligence technologies. Most of the business drivers and goals have been recognized and implemented. Average rating for the Key Performance Indicators is 3+ for Key Assessment Features and Components.
Level 4: Optimized - Business Intelligence technologies are focused around an enterprise data warehouse, are combined with a mature level of infrastructures, standards, processes, and integrated data and meta data libraries. Average rating for the Key Performance Indicators is 3 to 5 for Key Assessment Features and Components.
Level 5: Leader - The organization has a comprehensive set of optimized Business Intelligence technologies, standards, and processes. There is a strong commitment from management with resource and other support. Data and Information Quality initiatives are well established. The organization has moved into and adopted some set of competitive, effective management strategies, methods and systems.
