Business Intelligence plans and goals should reflect and match the business goals for the organization. The organization needs the right information at the right time. Return on resource investments and the success of the organization are dependent, in large part, on how well the business goals have been defined, communicated and translated into relevant and actionable business information. This KPI measures just how well the defined goals have been translated into actionable terms and incorporated into BI.
This KPI should be applied to essentially every one of the X factors/BI components. Each should be aligned to the goals of the organization, from infrastructures to data and information.
Metrics: The metric should include:
1. Translation of communicated goals into actionable terms for Business Intelligence creation and management. e.g. what categories and groups of data must be added to the data warehouse and when must the data be available?
2. Integration of Goals. Have the goals been integrated into the available business intelligence and the business intelligence infrastructures and constructs?
3. Repeatable alignment process. Has a process for alignment with organization goals been incorporated into the Business Intelligence planning, design and development strategies and methods?
4. Management knowledge base. Does management understand exactly what can and what cannot be accomplished through the creation and use of BI, given all the organization and industry constraints, capabilities and available data?
5. Review process. Is there a review, feedback, and correction process in place.
Note - Business alignment should be viewed and measured in terms of how BI has impacted and/or changed the organization - in addition to how BI integrates Business goals.
